Millions of people around the world own one or more dogs or cats. Having a pet companion is something that we all desire. We like to treat our pets like family, but some pet owners may take this too far. Many adults and children like to feed their dogs and cats human food, instead of pet food. Whether this is done on purpose or by accident, it can have serious consequences for your pet.
In order to keep your pet healthy and living a long life you should never give your dog or cat these foods:
1. Onions and garlic
In order to help keep your pet healthy and to improve your pet insurance you should make sure that you never give your dog or cat onions or garlic. Most people would not think to just give their dog one of these foods, however these foods are often found in many common human foods. For instance, some people may decide to give their dog or cat some of their leftover meat. Oftentimes, meat is cooked with these ingredients. These ingredients are toxic to cats and dogs and should never be fed to them, even in small amounts.
2. Raw eggs
Raw eggs should be avoided because they are also toxic for cats and dogs. Raw eggs contain harmful bacteria that can make both dogs and cats ill. The main bacteria found in raw eggs is salmonella. This is harmful to dogs, cats and humans.
3. Raw meat and bones
While many people think that dogs and cats would eat raw meat if they were in the wild, this is something that should be avoided. Raw meat is toxic to pets because it also contains harmful bacteria that can cause illness and even death. While wild animals may eat this, their lifespan is much shorter than a domestic animal. Therefore, if you want your dog or cat to live a long and healthy life, it is best to avoid feeding them raw meat. In addition, if raw meat has bones, these bones could splinter and cause more harm to your animal.
Theobromine is a main ingredient found in chocolate. While this ingredient is not harmful to humans, it is incredibly toxic to dogs and cats. Dogs and cats are unable to digest this ingredient and therefore, it can cause severe problems in their digestion. If it is consumed in high quantities, it can even result in death.
Caffeine also contains high levels of theobromine and therefore should not be given to dogs or cats. While many dogs and cats would not likely drink a cup of coffee, caffeine is prominent in some of the foods that we eat. All pet owners need to be careful to ensure that they do not give their dogs or cats any food or drinks that contain caffeine.
6. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins can result in kidney failure in dogs and cats if they are consumed. All amounts of grapes and raisins are incredibly toxic to these animals. While most dogs and cats would avoid eating these foods, there are always exceptions to what is normal. Be sure to keep a close eye on your pets to ensure that they do not eat foods that could cause them harm. Even a small grape or raisin, could have potentially harmful side effects.
